The sleepwalker

by Nelly Sachs

The sleepwalker
orbiting on his star
awakened
by the white feather of morning—
the bloodstain on it reminds him—
shocked, he drops
the moon—
the snowberry shatters
against the black agate of night—
smudged with dream—

Not a pure white on Earth—

Der Schlafwandler

by Nelly Sachs

Der Schlafwandler
kreisend auf seinem Stern
an der weissen Feder des Morgens
erwacht—
der Blutfleck darauf erinnerte ihn—
lässt den Mond
erschrocken fallen—
die Schneebeere zerbricht
am schwarzen Achat der Nacht—
traumbesudelt—

Kein reines Weiss auf Erden—

  1. I like the way you’ve been able to make use of alliteration in English, as the original does. ‘Erschrocken fallen’ has a nice downward rhythm to it which your English captures beautfiully with ‘shocked, he drops’.
